Career Moves
So you've just graduated from college and the first thing you want to do is move as far away from home/college/parents as possible. It seems like the natural order of things and by all means everyone should get out and explore the world outside their own, even if it's only for a vacation. But before you expend the time, money and goodwill of the friends that help move you to some bustling metropolis, consider a few things that should shape your decision:
Transportation
What is the commute like where you want to move? Is it affordable to own a car there? What are gas prices like relative to where you live now? Is it easy to park your car (at work and home)?
In North Louisiana the average commute is less than 20 minutes in the major cities and over 80% of the population has a commute of 30 minutes or less! And parking is plentiful.
Gas prices in North Louisiana are comparable to neighboring states and low relative to major urban areas in the U.S. US Gas Price Map
Housing
What are housing costs? Will you be able to live in your own apartment (or maybe even buy a house) or will you be forced to share a group house with four other people to make ends meet? Will housing costs force you to choose a suburban location when what you really want is to live in the city? And how will that impact your commute time?
Compared to major urban centers in the U.S., North Louisiana offers a wide variety of housing options to choose from and at significantly lower cost in many cases, whether you are renting or buying. And unlike many major Southern cities, you can both work and live in the city center without being a millionaire, which also means less of your time will be spent commuting and more time living!
Connections
Do you know anybody where you want to move? Any college alumni you can connect with to help you get a foot in the door somewhere, or family friends you can go to for help or advice?
Southern hospitality does not limit itself to social occasions in North Louisiana. This area prides itself on being warm and welcoming and that extends from the neighborhood to the workplace. From being involved in your alumni association to joining a civic group, opportunities to network with folks that WANT to help you succeed are abundant here.
