Founder of Community Garden Shares her Reasons for Returning Home and Creating a Community-focused Non-profit Leia Lewis, a North Louisiana native, returned to the area because of the resources available here (schools, family network) to support her and her young son Psalm. She is the founder of Sankofa Vision, a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to celebrating and cultivating the art, culture, and community life of people of African descent. The organization welcomes and encourages people of all backgrounds to participate in its programs. One of Sanokofa Vision’s central programs is Sakofa Gardens, an organic community garden and learning campus based in Shreveport, Louisiana. It is the site of creative and educational programming designed to unify community, strengthen family bonds, and enhance life skills for prosperity among residents of the Caddo Heights-Linwood area and beyond. Leia embodies the spirit of giving back to her community and the desire to share her knowledge and talent with others that residents of this region exhibit in abundance. |
